The Center for Pedagogical Innovations (CPI) of Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology conducted a one-day faculty training program titled “STAR & SCALE: Strengthening Teaching Activities for Result-Oriented Learning and Strengthening Competency in Assessment for Learning and Evaluation” on February 26, 2026, at the MICeL Training Room. The activity gathered faculty members for professional development focused on enhancing classroom teaching strategies and assessment practices.
With clear objectives, the training aimed to empower educators with innovative teaching methodologies, strengthen their competencies in crafting effective assessment tools, bridge pedagogy and evaluation to ensure alignment with learning outcomes, and introduce forward-looking perspectives such as the role of emerging technologies in reshaping classroom engagement and evaluation. Throughout the day, these guiding goals ensured that participants left with new knowledge and practical frameworks to transform their teaching and assessment practices, ready for implementation.
The morning session, STAR: Strengthening Teaching Activities for Result-Oriented Learning, focused on active, student-centered approaches in transforming classrooms into dynamic spaces of engagement and discovery. Facilitated by the Head of CPI Training Support Section, Dr. Roxan A. Consolacion, the session highlighted high-impact methodologies such as gamification and project-based learning. These strategies sparked curiosity, sustained motivation, and aligned with specific learning outcomes across face-to-face, asynchronous, and self-paced learning modalities. Workshops and collaborative presentations allowed participants to immediately translate theory into practice in making teaching a truly participatory experience.

In the afternoon, attention shifted to SCALE: Strengthening Competency in Assessment for Learning and Evaluation, underscoring the critical role of assessment in enhancing instruction and supporting student achievement. Led by Dr. Shelanee Theresa P. Ruales, a member of the CPI Training Support Section, guided the faculty in constructing effective outcome-based assessments to improve instruction and student success.
Adding a forward-looking dimension, Director of the Center for Information and Communication Technology, Dir. Dante D. Dinawanao, discussed the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) in assessment. In his discussion, he emphasized how emerging technologies could reshape evaluation practices, quiz design, and rubric development while encouraging faculty to thoughtfully integrate AI tools while upholding academic integrity and sound pedagogical principles. The session concluded with collaborative presentations of outputs, fostering collective reflection and shared learning.

The success of STAR & SCALE training was anchored in the vision and leadership of the CPI. As the university’s hub for teaching excellence, the Center continues to champion professional development initiatives that inspire faculty to reimagine their roles as educators. CPI Director Dr. Rabby Q. Lavilles underscored the importance of continuous innovation in pedagogy and assessment, expressing hope that the training would cultivate creativity, reflection, and purpose in teaching.
By weaving together teaching innovation and assessment excellence, STAR and SCALE embodied CPI’s commitment to nurturing educators as molders of knowledge and designers of meaningful learning journeys. The training was especially impactful for faculty instructors who sought to enhance student engagement and improve learning outcomes. With equal emphasis on teaching methodologies and assessment strategies, participants left with renewed inspiration, practical frameworks, and a deeper sense of purpose in their teaching journey.
