As one of the year’s early collaborative initiatives, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DMS) of the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), together with Linnaeus University in Sweden, University of the Philippines Diliman, Central Mindanao University, Holy Name University, Research Center for Theoretical Physics-CVIF, and the Mathematical Society of the Philippines (Regions 10, 12, and BARMM), successfully conducted the Topology and Algebra Workshops Philippines (TAWPh) 2026, held at Holy Name University in Tagbilaran, Bohol on January 5-10, 2026.

Anchored on two major areas of modern mathematics–Topology and Algebra–the workshop brought together researchers, educators, and students to engage in discussions and problem-solving sessions on specific structures such as cohomology rings, Thompson's group, Grigorchuk group, groupoids, Leavitt path algebras, and Kumjian-Pask algebras. Consultations with experts, peer teaching, and dialogues on research directions were also conducted, providing a dynamic environment for learning and collaboration.

The workshop’s resource speakers were experts from universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Poland, and Sweden, giving participants direct access to an international network of scholars for potential collaboration and mentorship.

The Department’s participation in TAWPh 2026 reflects its continued efforts to advance modern mathematics for young researchers across the Asian Global South and elevate the Filipino mathematical community.
