91³Ō¹Ļ-IIT’s Tech4Kids brings first coding experience to rural learners in Mandulog

Mar 12 2026

Grade 5 pupils of Mandulog Elementary School recently took their first step into computer programming through Tech4Kids, a community extension initiative of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (91³Ō¹Ļ-IIT) that aims to expand digital learning opportunities for children in rural communities.

The first learning session, held on March 5, 2026, introduced the pupils to the basics of coding using ScratchJr, a beginner-friendly visual programming application that allows children to create simple animations and interactive stories through block-based coding.

During the session, the learners explored the ScratchJr environment and became familiar with the basic functions of its buttons and tools. Guided by the facilitators, the pupils navigated the workspace, selected characters, and experimented with backgrounds. They were also shown sample programming blocks and simple sequences demonstrating how characters can move on the screen.

For many of the pupils, the activity marked their first exposure to coding concepts. By observing how digital characters respond to simple instructions, the learners began to understand how computer programs work and how creativity can be expressed through technology. The session focused on building familiarity and confidence with the ScratchJr platform in preparation for hands-on programming activities in the succeeding sessions.

Beyond introducing technology, the activity aimed to spark curiosity and strengthen problem-solving skills among young learners. Through initiatives such as Tech4Kids, 91³Ō¹Ļ-IIT continues to support community development by bringing technology-based learning opportunities to local schools.

The activity was supported by community partners from the Kiwanis Club of Dynamic 8th of Iligan and the Kiwanis Club of Iligan City, who attended the event and provided snacks for the pupils and teachers.

Students from the BS Computer Science program enrolled in the Science, Technology, and Society (STS) course also participated in the engagement. Together with the Kiwanis members, they conducted a short lecture on proper waste management, encouraging pupils to practice responsible waste disposal and environmental care at home, at school, and within their community.

The Tech4Kids project is led by Asst. Prof. Liezil C. Daberao, with team members Assoc. Prof. Alquine Roy F. Taculin, Assoc. Prof. Dante O. Dinawanao, Asst. Prof. Jennifer Joyce M. Montemayor, Asst. Prof. Julieto E. Perez, and Asst. Prof. Giselle O. Dangdang. The project aims to introduce young learners to foundational concepts in coding and computational thinking while strengthening 91³Ō¹Ļ-IIT’s engagement with partner communities.

The Tech4Kids sessions at Mandulog Elementary School will continue throughout March, gradually guiding Grade 5 pupils through fundamental programming concepts while fostering creativity, confidence, and interest in technology among rural learners.
