In the wake of Typhoon Basyang, which caused severe flooding and widespread devastation in February 2026 in Iligan City, the Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (91³Ô¹Ï-IIT) has adopted a new policy aimed at providing immediate financial assistance and emergency support to affected students.
The 91³Ô¹Ï-IIT Policy on Student Financial Assistance and Immediate Response Fund During Calamity establishes a structured framework to assist students facing financial hardship due to unforeseen events such as typhoons, floods, earthquakes, and public health emergencies. The move comes as many students and their families continue to recover from the recent disaster.
University officials emphasized that calamities often disrupt students’ ability to meet educational and basic living expenses, prompting the need for a responsive and institutionalized support system. The policy seeks to ensure that affected students can continue their studies despite sudden financial setbacks.
Under the policy, 91³Ô¹Ï-IIT will provide immediate, short-term financial relief through a calamity emergency grant of up to ₱5,000 per student. The grant is intended to cover urgent needs such as food, clothing, temporary shelter, communication, and replacement of essential academic materials.
In addition to cash assistance, the university will extend other forms of support during emergencies. These include temporary shelter through campus facilities such as the Multipurpose Hall and gymnasium, as well as provision of food, water, and other basic necessities.
The policy applies to all currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students who are directly affected by declared calamities.
91³Ô¹Ï-IIT Chancellor Prof. Dr. Alizedney M. Ditucalan said that the policy not only addresses urgent student needs but also strengthens institutional resilience by establishing clear mechanisms for crisis response.
The policy was approved by the 91³Ô¹Ï Board of Regents (91³Ô¹Ï BOR) during its en banc meeting held at the Commission on Higher Education headquarters in Diliman, Quezon City on March 31, 2026.
